Working from Home Tips from the Coach!

Excerpt: Many of our clients work from home.   One of  our clients who does is Pat Weber, who is a “Personal Coach for the Sales Reluctant”. We’ve had the pleasure of both working on her beautiful home in Williamsburg as a contractor as well as being entertained there as a guest. When it comes to working from home, she knows her stuff!  I asked her if we could post this great article she wrote on her blog.  We were thrilled when she consented!  So, here it is:   How do you minimize family distractions when working from home It had to happen. Someone did ask,…

Dream Space of the Week: Closet

“We need to dream big dreams, propose grandiose means, if we are to recapture the excitement, the vibrancy and pride we once had.” – Coleman Young.

We are currently working with a client on designing a closet space for her, so closets are “on my mind”… (*cue theme music: “Georgia on my mind”) It’s fun to dream and imagine possibilities.  I came across this closet on one of my favorite websites and had to share it with those of you who aren’t afraid to dream:

Roof Details Matter: Blown Off Shingles & Ridgevent

Archived; click post to view.
Excerpt: You can pick the highest quality shingle on the market, but if your installer cuts corners on the quality of the ridgecaps or the length of the nails he is using on the ridgevent, you are headed for failure if the roof ever gets tested in a high wind situation! Manufacturer warranties are VOID if the roof or ridgevent is not installed to their specifications and you are left with a costly repair. This is why we say “don’t pick the product, pick the contractor”.  The right contractor will use the right materials to ensure your investment is protected by a proper…

More Vents Are Not Necessarily Better

Excerpt: The ever vigilant Brad Brinke of  Pro Craft Home Inspections and author of  Going Green means sometime just being a little smarter, sent us the following picture he just snapped on a Virginia Beach home of the classic example of cross venting. Bill Taylor, ventilation guru, who gave us Tips for the Balance System for Attic Ventilation,  and Venting On Your Neighbor commented: “That is comical. Actually, we just ended our “Ask the Expert” seminar in Richmond a couple hours ago. One of the slides in the presentation is an install similar to this with multiple types of vents. The room roared with laughter when they…

Hurricane Irene Storm Damage Is Still Here

Archived; click post to view.
Excerpt: In August 2011, Hurricane Irene caused major damage to homes from Virginia Beach to Yorktown, Virginia.   The local contractors responded quickly, but now 5 months later we are still repairing some of the damage. Why?  Insurance companies can be argumentative and slow to pay at times…and when they do, mortgage companies often have to sign off on each check.  The process of restoration is tedious and it has little to do with the actual work being done.  The hard work is done before the first nail is driven. We tarped a lot of roofs immediately after the storm to protect the…

How about a Secret Playroom Remodel?

Via Apartment Therapy: “The home’s owner found the old armoire secondhand. He then hired a woodworker to take out the back and install it up against a doorway into his children’s play room. The result is a simple-enough-looking armoire that opens to a hidden room of magic and play.” It was designed and built by Maple Seed Renovation in Portland, Oregon.

Getting Your Money’s Worth – A Minor Bathroom Remodel in Chesapeake Virginia

Excerpt: From the Desk of: Kris Austin, Chief Estimator for Jim Hicks Home Improvment It doesn’t matter if you are in Yorktown, Virginia Beach, or anywhere else.  If you do a little homework, you can probably save money or get a lot more for your money if you call in the real pros to give you a consultation.  Recently my dad, against my recommendations, invited a local big-box hardware store consultant into his bathroom for a free estimate to replace his fiberglass tub – after all, it WAS free and he thought maybe they would have a unique idea.  I told him to…

Experience the Aurora Borealis Everyday…During Your Virginia Beach Morning Shower!

Excerpt: An Aurora Borealis each morning?  In Virginia Beach? Moving Color Tiles have introduced  4 x 4 glass tiles that appear black at room temperature, but move through the color spectrum as the temperature of the water in the shower hitting them changes. The Northern Lights Tile line  uses  temperature to create a sensation of moving colors.  When warm water or radiant heat is applied to the amazing shower tiles, you see quite a range of color, much like the “mood rings” of the 70’s. This would be a fun addition to any bathroom remodel for those that are feeling like a Northern adventure without leaving…

Excerpt: A FIVE YEAR OLD’S FIRST JOB. Here’s a truly heartwarming story about the bond formed between a little five year old girl and some construction workers that will make you believe that we all can make a difference when we give a child the gift of our time. A young family moved into a house, next to a vacant lot. One day, a construction crew turned up to start building a house on the empty lot. The young family’s five year-old daughter naturally took an interest in all the activity going on next door and spent much of each day observing the…
