Installed in a roof or ceiling, skylights allow natural light to permeate a home. They are a welcome alternative to harsh electric bulbs, making a small room feel larger and giving any room a more natural feel.
Did You Know?
Decreased amounts of sunlight can lead to serious mood changes in some people. Studies have shown the benefits of natural light, including higher productivity levels and improved mood. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is recognized as a common disorder, with its prevalence in the U.S. ranging from 1.4 percent in Florida to 9.7 percent in New Hampshire.
Skylight Transforms a Room
Recently, one of our customers in Newport News remarked that after a complete home remodel, the choice of installing the 4ft x 4ft Velux glass skylight with remote control venting and shade was what earned him “hero” status with his wife. Enjoying the moon and the stars at night and the peaceful glow of the sunshine during the day completely changed how they enjoyed the room.
We Recommend Replacing with Velux Skylights
There are many skylight manufacturers out there, however Jim Hicks Home Improvement only recommends one – Velux. We’ve tried a number of others over the years, but our best experiences are with this product. In fact, we even visited the factory to witness their quality control and took their hands-on training to ensure the best results for our clients.

Velux Sun Tunnel Skylight
Sun tunnel skylights are perfect for small spaces like closets, interior bathrooms, hallways and stairways. A Virginia Beach homeowner explained the difference in this way, “The natural light is brighter than fluorescent bulbs and it doesn’t distort colors.”
Myth: All Skylights Leak
Fact: Not a Velux. Flashing problems cause skylights to leak. Velux skylights are unique because they use a factory fabricated flashing kit that comes with each of their skylights. This is critical because it means the skylight doesn’t rely on caulk on the flashing corners to prevent water infiltration.
In fact, with their most advanced line of skylights, Velux promises no leaks, no worries and they back it up with an industry first 10-year installation warranty. The No Leak skylight line offers 3 layers of water protection with all these deck mounted skylights and associated flashing systems.
Myth: All Skylights Fog Up
Fact: Not a Velux. Clouding or fogging of an insulating glass unit occurs when there is a break in the inner seal between the glass panes. As a result condensation forms between the two panes. Velux Units manufactured after January 1, 2000 have a 20 year seal warranty, the best in the industry.
We are happy to repair or replace any skylight. We can also remove skylights.
