Excerpt: We have a lot of fun on our Facebook Page reposting home remodeling pictures that we find and enjoying the feedback that our fans give us.  It’s always amazing to read the divergence of opinions on each picture! Most of our Facebook Fans are from our local area of Hampton Roads, VA – which is made up of the cities of Yorktown, Virginia Beach, Newport News, Williamsburg, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton, Suffolk, Portsmouth, but their opinions are hardly homogeneous! What’s really interesting is when we receive an overwhelming response, either positive or negative, on a home improvement or remodeling picture.   That’s when I enjoy sharing…

I did not wake up in Bahrain this morning…

Excerpt: This is the Bahrain World Trade Center It is the first skyscraper to have wind turbines integrated into the structure of the building. This airfoil tapering allows the wind to enter the turbines at a perpendicular angle and increases air speed as much as 30 percent in each of the 95 ft wide turbine rotors. The turbines supply about 15 percent of the electricity used by the skyscraper approximately the same amount of electricity used by 300 homes. While I’m still here in Hampton Roads, during this election season make sure your home votes for Jim Hicks: Pro-Improvement & Anti-Bad Things! Yorktown, Virginia Beach,…

Why Didn’t They Think of That In My Bathroom Remodel?

Excerpt: We like to say that the key to Design-Build remodeling is to design BEFORE you build not “AS” you build. The hard work is done before the first nail is driven: in the design of the remodeled project. Some of these pictures reminded me this morning that great design can really make the entire project. Bathroom Design and Remodeling Inspirations

Excerpt: I woke up this morning to some really impressive designs and pictures from Case Design and Remodel in Bethesda, Maryland. I have had the privilege of knowing Bruce Case and Joaquin Erazo at Case and even spoke at their annual meeting a few years back.  They have an outstanding team of people and I always learn so much whenever I spend time with them! This morning I really was impressed by this luxury shower:   I was also a big fan of this one. I enjoyed the contrasting blue color on the walls with the white tile wainscot.  Maybe it’s just that I seem…

Taking Home Theaters to a Whole New Level

Archived; click post to view.
Excerpt: When talk turns to home theaters and home entertainment systems, much of the focus is on the equipment: how many speakers you have, how expensive your electronics are, how big your screen is, or whether you own a front-projection system. But what about the room itself?  Does the room that you’re in and your comfort level impact your viewing experience? Does where you’re watching impact the quality of your enjoyment? Does who you’re watching with make a difference? How about incorporating a karaoke system or a stage for family performances? What level could you take a gamer’s experience to?  Would yours be the home that all…

How to find a roof leak: Use a Water Test

Archived; click post to view.
Excerpt: It’s simple and works so effectively, you’d be amazed that more contractors don’t use this technique. Start at the lowest point that the water could be entering the roof system. Let the water run for 10+ minutes to rule out each component from the bottom up. The farther you move away from where the leak is showing on the interior, the more time you will have to give each component to test for leaking, due to the fact that if that component is leaking, the water now has to run farther before it shows on the interior. When testing brick,…

Case Study: Home Remodel & Lessons Learned

Excerpt: A friend of mine recently completed a home remodel in upstate New York.  I was fascinated to hear about the adventure that led to the beautiful transformation of her home!  I couldn’t help but think to myself that her experience was so much like those of our customers at Jim Hicks Home Improvements here in Virginia.  I’m sure a potential client in Yorktown who is thinking about remodeling their home, or someone in Virginia Beach who would like a new bathroom, or maybe a homeowner I recently met with in Newport News who is dreaming of a new kitchen remodel, would…

Monier Tile Roof on Amazing Home in Kingsmill, Williamsburg Virginia

Excerpt: I was invited to examine a Monier cement tile roof on a Williamsburg home yesterday.  The homeowner told me that she couldn’t find any roofing contractors in Williamsburg that knew how to work on her roof.   We were happy to help! When we arrived at the home, it took our breath away! I tried to explain how unique and special it was to a few friends and failed miserably, so I decided the best way to share with all of you was through pictures. It was a “featured home” in sept/oct 2008 issue of VA Living Magazine, and is 7,150sf!  And it’s for sale!  …
